Sailmakers, Commercial road, London

BB Partnership are proud to announce that they have gained planning approval for a unique 110,000sq.ft mixed-use development in Tower Hamlets. The site lies between the A13 (commercial Road) to the south and the Limehouse Cut to the north.

The scheme uniqueness is that as well as delivering 30,000sq.ft of office space and 9 residential apartments it will also provide 60,000sq.ft of co-living and co-working space comprising 134 units with communal facilities. This is the first planning approval in this part of London for a development that provides this type of communal living use on a large scale and it is one of only a very few within the whole of London.

The other point of interest is that on the site there is a Grade 2 listed Victorian industrial building. Its historical significance is that it is one of two remaining original sailmaking lofts in London and a good example of early steel framed manufacturing spaces but due to its dilapidated condition it is on Historic Englands ‘At Risk’ register categorised as ‘Very Bad’. The intention is to save the building by fully restoring its internal and external fabric and sensitively adapt it to provide office space.
