| Primary Health Care Centre, Walthamstow, London E17
This new-build health care centre was commissioned by the Redbridge and Waltham Forest Primary Care Trust. The trusts aim was to create a flagship development in this area of London which was in great need of modern medical facilities to supplement as well as replace some of the run-down premises in the locality.
The building is located on the site of an old petrol station. The site was chosen due to its prominent location on the corner of a main road. The new three storey health centre provides surgery premises for three GP practices, general community care services plus administration and conference facilities. There is also a separate drop-in minor operations suite.
The plan layout and form of the building successfully resolve a difficult brief. This called for ensuring each GP practice could retain its own identity, whilst sharing the buildings' communal facilities and maintaining secure access to each floor. It also had to enable each floor to be used by different groups without compromising the security of the users/occupiers. This is particularly important for when the building is used outside of normal working hours.
The exterior of the building was designed to give it a strong and solid appearance whilst respecting the planners preference of blending it in with the Edwardian character of the existing buildings in the area.
